An introduction to autism

What is autism?  Well first of all I can explain what it is as I am autistic myself.  There are different types of autism and mine is in the middle range.  The most common symptoms of autism are wanting to be alone most of the time rather than being social, if we are social we tend to do it on a one to one person basis and tend to get on with people older than ourselves.  For example people always used to find it strange that 8 would get on well with adults 2 or 3 times my age when I was about 2 years old.

Most kids had the terrible twos I didn’t at all my tantrums came much later when I was about seven years old.  I did very well in school earlier in life as I was able to read and write from an early age.

Autistic people tend to have one main interest which they are very passionate about and mine is cars and still is.  I could name most model when I was 2 years old and always corrected people when they were incorrect ( a good example is when I sent my sister in the pouring rain to confirm).

From the age of six upwards I struggled big time with my mood swings and anxiety around others.  School was stressful and I found it hard to understand things quickly as well as communicating with others.  I had various tantrums and was send outside of class many times.  The first thing the teacher would ask is if there was any issues at home which I was told by my parents not to mention anything negative.

I was sent to loads of physicians of different kinds but they all said there was nothing wrong with me and the only way was to control my temper myself which I couldn’t.  It wasn’t until 11 years ago I was diagnosed as autistic and I am grateful for who diagnosed me after all this time.
